FAQs

Why does the wood surface feel prickly or rough after painting?

This is known as "Grain Raising." Water-based paints contain moisture; when wood fibers absorb this water, they swell and stand upright.

Recommendation: After the first coat is dry, lightly sand the surface smooth with fine sandpaper (grit 400 or higher). Wipe away the dust before applying the second coat to achieve a smooth finish.

The original wood color was beautiful, so why did it turn very dark or uneven after painting?

Differences in the wood's water absorption rate lead to inconsistent colors. Even with clear coats, a "color enhancement" effect occurs once dry (similar to how wood looks when wet).

Recommendation: Always test the paint on a corner or a scrap piece of wood before starting. To reduce color differences, you can apply a "sanding sealer" first.

Can I spray or brush water-based wood coating directly over old oil-based paint?

No. Water-based and oil-based paints have different adhesion properties. Applying directly will cause repulsion, leading to peeling or sagging.

Recommendation: You must completely sand off the old paint to expose the bare wood. At the very least, ensure the old layer is thoroughly sanded (roughened) and wax-free, though complete removal remains the safest method.

Why do tiny bubbles appear on the surface after the paint has dried?

This is usually caused by applying the paint immediately after vigorous stirring, or by brushing too fast and trapping air in the paint film.

Recommendation: Let the paint sit for 5–10 minutes after stirring to allow bubbles to dissipate. Use gentle strokes and avoid over-brushing the same area repeatedly.

Does water-based wood coating need to be diluted with water? What is the ratio?

Most commercially available water-based wood coatings are adjusted to a ready-to-use concentration. Some products allow for 5%–10% water dilution.

Recommendation: Keep the water addition within 5%–10%. Excessive water reduces the protective strength and color vibrancy of the paint film.

Why did a white, cloudy mist (blooming/blushing) appear on the surface a few days after drying?

This typically happens because the humidity was too high during application (e.g., a rainy day), causing moisture to be trapped inside the paint film.

Recommendation: Avoid painting when humidity exceeds 80%. If this occurs, you can try using a heater or a gentle warm air blower; if that fails, the paint must be sanded off and redone.

How long does it take to dry? When can I walk on it or place items?

Water-based paints dry quickly; usually, the surface is dry to the touch and ready for a re-coat in 1–2 hours

Recommendation: While the surface dries fast, the film needs time to fully harden. It is recommended to wait 24–48 hours before normal use, though you should always follow specific product guidelines.

Can indoor water-based paint be used on outdoor balconies?

It is not recommended. Outdoor-specific paints contain UV additives and stronger anti-mold agents; indoor paint will degrade and crack quickly if used outdoors.

Recommendation: Ensure the packaging is labeled as "Outdoor Use" or "Indoor/Outdoor Universal" before purchasing.

Why are there obvious brush marks after painting?

This may be due to bristles that are too stiff, or high temperatures causing the paint to dry too fast before it can level out.

Recommendation: Use a soft synthetic fiber brush (designed for water-based paint). Avoid working in direct sunlight or high-temperature, drafty areas to allow the paint more time to flow and level.

How should I store unused water-based wood coating?

Water-based paint is susceptible to microbial contamination, which can cause it to smell.

Recommendation: Ensure the cap is tightly sealed and store it in a cool place. Note: If the leftover paint has been diluted with water, its shelf life will be shortened; use it as soon as possible and do not pour it back into the original container.
