FAQs

Gel-type wood wax oil looks like jelly; do I need to stir it?

Yes. Although the gel consistency reduces dripping, it still requires moderate stirring to ensure that the wax, oil, and pigments are evenly distributed. It will temporarily thin out during stirring and return to a gel state after sitting; this is normal.

Why is the gel type better than the liquid type at avoiding "color differences"?

Liquid coatings instantly soak into porous areas of wood (like end grains or softwoods), causing dark spots. Gel coatings have strong "pseudoplasticity," meaning they don't penetrate uncontrollably upon contact. This gives the user plenty of time to spread the color evenly for a consistent tone.

Can this gel coating be applied with a brush, or only with a cloth?

Both can be used, but "wiping" yields the best results. The gel design is intended for rubbing, much like traditional wood wax oil. Rubbing with a cotton cloth allows the coating to bond more deeply with the wood fibers, while a brush is better for corners or narrow gaps.

If I accidentally apply it too thick, will it dry into a "skin" like regular water-based paint?

Water-based wood wax oil is inherently a penetrative coating. If applied too thickly without wiping away the excess, the surface may feel "sticky" or show uneven gloss after drying.

Recommendation: After 5–10 minutes of application, always use a clean cloth to wipe away any excess material that hasn't been absorbed.

What are the benefits of using gel wood wax oil on vertical surfaces (e.g., sides of cabinets, walls)?

This is its greatest advantage! Because it has high viscosity when at rest, it does not sag or
run. Users don't have to worry about the coating dripping onto the floor or leaving unsightly
"teardrop" marks on vertical surfaces.

Why does the wood grain look blurry and less transparent than expected?

This is usually caused by "insufficient rubbing" or "thick application". If the gel coating piles up on the surface, it covers the grain.

Recommendation: Apply small amounts in multiple layers. Use the friction of the cloth to "push" the oil into the wood pores; this enhances the color while preserving the natural texture of the wood.

Can gel-type water-based wood wax oil be applied by spraying?

It is not recommended. Spraying requires low-viscosity fluids. The pseudoplastic design of the gel is for manual application; spraying can lead to uneven atomization or clogged nozzles, and it loses the manual advantage of "slow penetration and even coloring".

Is the gel type better than the liquid type for refurbishing old wood?

Yes. Old wood often has damage or inconsistent pores, and liquid coatings can pool and darken in cracks. The gel type has better adhesion and controlled penetration, making it easier to cover minor flaws and provide an even refurbished color.

Does it take longer to dry than regular water-based wood wax oil?

The drying mechanisms are similar (water evaporation + oxidation), but if the gel is not rubbed thin enough, it may be harder for the internal moisture to evaporate.

If the color is too light after completion, can I add more?

Yes. Once the first coat is completely dry, lightly sand along the grain with fine sandpaper (grit 400–600) and apply a second coat. Because of its strong pseudoplasticity, the color layers very evenly without leaving overlap marks.
